I’m rarely one to wade on on religious discussions. (Despite being the child of a Canadian Minister and raised in the church). However, you can’t help but follow some of the controversial science versus religious discussions happening this week.
The first, is from Stephen Hawking. Hawking universally considered to be one of the smartest men in the world has dismissed religious theories relating to matters of science for years, arguing “the universe is governed by science.” Heaven is nothing more than a “fairy story” invented by people who are “afraid of the dark.”
A pretty bold statement to make to the 4 billion or so followers of some religion world wide. The science of evolution is seemingly bulletproof and th longer I study human behaviour, the more I think we’re just cavemen with good PR agents.
It also must mean if he is a non-believer (as he so clearly is), then he won’t be saved this Saturday when the End of Days comes. Have you heard bout this? What do you think about it? Are you praying and buying water? Or is the whole thing going to be another great hoax?
If you don’t know much about it there is an apparent belief that God is returning on May 21st and a series of earthquakes will shock the world. A movement of Christians loosely organized by radio broadcasts and websites, independent of churches and convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin on May 21, 2011.
To get the word out, they’re using billboards and bus stop benches, traveling caravans of RVs and volunteers passing out pamphlets on street corners. Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling in countries from Latin America to Africa to spread the news outside the U.S.
What I find crazy is the story that people are spending thier life possessions to advertise this Judgement Day date. It reminds me of the Arnold Schwartzenegger movie aout the religious prophecies. Have a quick read of the story about the subway worker who spent $140,000 of his life savings saying this is the countdown. http://www.democraticunderground.com…ess=214×279723
What are these people going to do when May 21st comes and goes without incident? Thoughts??
